Grammar Police

I have such a pet peeve about bad spelling and grammar. I mean... I'm not the grammar police, by any means. A simple mistake here and there? Totally understandable. It's certainly not like I always use proper English myself. But oh my lord, some of the errors people consistently make just make my skin crawl. And I'm not talking about people's personal blogs here... I'm talking about the writing people do AT WORK, FOR MONEY. I mean lord, hit spell check! Examples of errors that have come across my desk so far today:

• "Other vehicle was not suppost to pass our vehicle" ummm, I think you mean "supposed to"
• "once and a while" come on, that doesn't even make sense, think before you type!
• "must of been" NO. It's "must HAVE been", aughhh.
• "que" Ok, I get that for some of you, "queue" is a difficult word to spell. But how do you not look at "que" and immediate know you've got it wrong?? Ask for help!
• "supeana"

Weekend Wrapup

This weekend Nick and I went for a 10 mile bike ride with our friends Sharon and Brian. The first part of the bike path is a loooooooong hill and I wasn't 100% sure Sharon and I were going to make it to the top. All you could hear was the frantic clicking of gears as we slow motion pedaled to the top. I think the only thing that kept us going was the shame of watching Nick and Brian zoom ahead and become tiny dots in the distance. Most of the rest of the trail was fairly flat, but 10 miles is 10 miles, and by the end of it we all felt like we'd had a decent workout. The minute we got home I jumped in front of the mirror and asked Nick if my thighs looked smaller... with a totally straight face he replied, "Definitely". Smart man.

In other news... the old stove and dishwasher are gone!! When Sears came to install our new stove, dishwasher and microwave, they took the old stove away. Looking at our beautiful new appliances made me more annoyed than ever by the continued presence of the dishwasher... so last night I threw it on craigslist just for the heck of it. Literally 2 minutes after I posted the listing someone emailed me... and less than an hour later he was loading the dishwasher into his van! Now all we have left to unload is an old, possibly not functional trash compactor... (I know you want it) and if no one claims that by tonight I will most likely be sneaking it into the dumpster, because once that's gone we can rearrange our living room furniture and get the place looking nice!

We also made a trip to our storage unit, so I now have dishes, pots and pans, and all my other kitchen essentials. No more empty cabinets. No more dining on paper plates with plastic forks - well not out of necessity anyway. Last night I made dinner and I actually had everything I needed which felt wonderful. Tonight Nick is going to put my bookshelf together and possibly hang the decorative votive holders we bought to hang over the couch in the living room. Things are finally starting to look put together!

One last thing... if you haven't already entered the contest over at SITS you should really go do that. I'm crossing my fingers that this contest will be my first win, because my ipod died a few weeks ago and the loss is KILLING ME. Total silence at my desk everyday. It's really very tragic. :( So if you're reading this SITS girls... I am desperate to win that ipod! :)

Saturday Morning Ramble

Nick and I went into work for a few hours this morning, and on our way in the front door, the security guard gave us a warm hello. I love this guy because he's told me many times (on makeup-free weekend days!) that he thinks I look like Helen Hunt... which I think is hilarious because a) I don't look like Helen Hunt, BUT b) for years I have been telling my mom that I think SHE looks like Helen Hunt. (She does I promise. Especially in profile.) Spooky.

Tonight I'm going to one of those catalogue parties, which I normally veto on principle, because I'm not into the whole "come to my party where you will be socially obligated to purchase overpriced shit you don't need" concept. But my friend Sharon is throwing this one, so I'm making an exception. Also, she's selling food, not candles or jewelry or something. And a lot of us from work are going, so it'll be a fun chance to see each other outside of our cubicles.

After the party, Nick and I are meeting a bunch of other couples from work to go cosmic bowling... guys vs girls in the ultimate showdown. The girls have been practicing on the sly via Wii bowling. The guys have mostly been relying on bravado and intimidation tactics. There's been talk of stretching and stance perfection. Some of the guys have been practicing their victory shimmies. I'm pretty sure it's going to be fantastic. I think I need to take some pictures. Especially if anyone busts out a shimmy. 

Hive Update

So I went to the doctor, and he is extremely confident that yes, I am Very Allergic to something. When I saw the welts this morning (which quickly spread over my arms and alarmingly, started to move to my face) I was starting to think maybe I'd come into contact with Poison Ivy or something similar... but the doctor said nope, the problem is definitely an allergic reaction to something. He gave me 3 different antihistamines to take to relieve my symptoms and suggested that I go for allergy testing to see what the allergy is. After asking me all the standard what-new-product-have-you-started-using questions, he decided that most likely I have just recently developed a new allergy. I'm supposed to take my new pills for a few days to let my skin calm down and then call the allergist he referred me to.

After my appointment, I immediately came home and popped the first dose of pills. I laid on my bed with a book and promptly fell asleep... and when I woke up a few hours later, the welts on my arms were 99% gone and my face was back to normal. I'm definiely still getting a few welts here and there, but it's nothing like before, and I can deal with it. (Also, none on my face! Bonus!) Still... I'll probably just call the allergist tomorrow and make an appointment... may as well start trying to figure out what the allergy is, right?

One small complaint: one of the pills I started taking is Zyrtec, and when I just went to take the first one, I discovered that the pills are each idividually wrapped in hard plastic packaging. And extremely difficult to open. I mean... is that really necessary? They can't just come in a bottle? In a fit of frustration I ended up using my teeth to tear the package open, and I STILL wound up tossing the pack at Nick to finish extracting the damn pill.

Crossing my fingers that I wake up hive-free tomorrow morning...

Hopefully it just has to get worse before it gets better...

So last night I took my Benadryl, took a bath, and tried to chill out. And it worked! I had a few minor twitches of The Itch, but nothing I couldn't ignore. I went to bed feeling like I might be ok after all.

Then I woke up itching at 1 a.m. And 2:30. And when I woke up at 4, the itching was so bad I stumbled out of the room in search of Benadryl, frantically clawing at my arms along the way. And this time the Benadryl didn't kick in for over an hour. So I spent close an hour and a half lying in my bed willing myself not to scratch. Nick was nice enough to talk to me for a while, and we ran through the usual Allergy Checklist together (still can't think of anything). When I was still awake and semi-frantic at 5:30, I decided that it was probably time to go to the doctor.

When I woke up at 7 and saw huge scary welts on my arm near my elbow, this decision was reinforced. Doctor's office opens at 9, stay tuned.

Obligatory Opener

Hi all... I'll try to spare everyone the First Post Awkwardness. I'm in kind of a Big Changes place in my life right now - newish job, new location, and The Boyfriend and I are buying our first house together. In order to best accomplish that, we'll be renting out our condo and crashing at his mom's for a few months to pay off some stuff before we buy the house.
